944 starts then stops
I have an 84 944 that will start then stop after running around one second. This problem comes and goes but it is here now and the car will not run. I have replaced the fuel pump relay with no help. The sensors are new. I have also checked the fuel pump by taking off the rail plug and checking the output. I don't know were to go from here. Can anyone help????

Have had similar problem, are you getting full voltage @ the pump? Bosch pumps are voltage sensitive and stop running if the drop is too great.

Classic bad AFM symptoms, as krystar says.
AFM=Air Flow Meter. It's the gubbins right beside the air box that measures the airflow into the engine via a sprung 'barn door' inside it. To find it, locate the air box and the J-boot (looks like it sounds), and it's attached to both, right between them. There's a connector on its side - check there for a bad connection. Try FRwilk's website for testing and mods.

ok so I took the AFM connector off and sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner. The car started right up after this. Is this enough or should I test the AFM? The connector did not look dirty and the problem does come and go. I have a Haynes manual and there is a test procedure but they do not tell you which is the #9 pin. Should I go to FRwilk's as mentioned above. I don't trust it yet. What do you guys think?

This is the same problem you had in your first post:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/630978-84-944-starts-then-stops-about-two-seconeds.html AFM is always a good place to start. You mentioned you have new sensors. DO YOU have TACH BOUNCE when you grind the engine to start? No tach bounce means the DME computer is not getting a signal from the reference sensors. The tach needle has to "bounce" 1/16th" of an inch when you crank. New sensors may be bad or the wires to the DME need to be checked. Did you check the sensor GAP? Are the pins on the flywheel clean and not coated with oil? Are the pins damaged? Here is a wire checklist to the DME 35 pin connector: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/5676317-post5.html Have you checked the rotor to make sure it is on tight? The coil is seldom the problem but the coil wire may be damaged. GL John
