Broke something
Recently completed putting a newer engine in my 85.
I used the clutch that came with the motor as it looked absolutely brand new0 still had the grease on the splines and it was a sachs spring centered one. The car was exhibiting a grind when i let the clutch out intermittently. You could feel it a little about 2 3rds up the clutch pedal travel. Today in my driveway I took off from a standstill - it let out a might grind and then nothing. The car will now not move and acts like it is neutral. I can change gear with the engine running without the clutch. There is also no nois when i press down the pedal. Its like the clutch is engaged the whole time. What could I have broken? |
Hopefully, only the clutch!

Why would the clutch go good to bad instantaneously. The clutch was almost brand new.
What else can make the car act like that. If i turn in the car off amd stick it in first it acts like it is not in gear at all and rolls forward. Surely even if the clutch was worn it would hold the car some. |
Ok, had a look under there this morning and pulled the starter and slave. The slave is definitely working so at least there that!
I checked the level of tranny fluid and it was about a half inch lower than the inspection hole, so I decided to drain the transmission oil and it was incredibly dark and smells slightly burnt. I then stuck my finger in the drain hole and it was very sludgy and there is definitely metal shavings in the bottom of the pan and lots of them. I guess this means the transmission needs replacing. I didnt hink it would be the clutch as I had just done it. Also the grind when releasing the pedal I had read possibly meant the transmission is on its way out. |
If you did not replace the throwout bearing - or even if you did - this could have failed and jammed the clutch.

Sounds like you broke your Ring and Pinion in the transaxle.
Jack the car up, engine off put it in gear, parking brake off. Open up the viewport at the front of the transaxle. Try to turn the Torque Tube shaft. If it turns then there's something up with your clutch. If it doesn't then see if you can turn both wheels. If they turn with the car in gear, your differential is shot - likely the R&P. Good luck, Keith |
Ok looks like its the clutch - thanks for the tip Kieth.
When i spin the rear wheels in gear the torque tube moves fine. Clutch job it is then - sweet. |
The grinding was probably the throw out bearing.
Your pressure plate isn't pushing against the clutch disc. Make sure the clutch disc is facing the correct way. If you can still read it, it should say Getriebe Zeite (tranny side), meaning- this side facing back towards the tranny. I know that sounds silly, but.....seen it all. I even saw a clutch fork installed backwards one time! A new clutch kit will have what you need, but I'd take it apart first before ordering. :) Sorry to hear it, but good luck. |
Well looks like it was the pilot bearing - pulled the clutch apart (nothing to it ha ha) and the pilot bearing seems to have had some kind of catastrophic failure. It tore apart and some of it seems to have wedged on one of the flywheel bolts and it looks like this has caused the clutch to seperate into two.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1321387750.jpg i was kinda amazed when I saw it. Anyway that was fun - It looked brand new when I was putting it together |
I almost said R&P but usually when that fails your car will turn for a certain point then it will lock up both wheels.
|
It's always more fun when you get to do a job twice in short succession, kind of reminds me of the doublemint gum jingle, "double your pleasure, double your fun"
|
But you get really good at it!
Ok, so the grinding noise might also have been the clutch disc disintegrating at the same time. Where's the duct tape? |
Stupid clutch.

I know, huh, why can't we all just drive automatics?!:D

Not to mention the auto that came with the 944 is really lacking. |

I had the engine out before so now I have gone through the whole car. Ive pulled the engine, dropped all the front suspension, dropped the transmission and everything inbetween. Only thing left is the rear suspension I think.
