Intercooler in N/A

Anyone manage to mount an intercooler in an N/A body without swapping to a turbo front end?

If not, are there any good aftermarket options that mount in front of the radiator? Kinda where the AC condenser is supposed to sit.

its been done. do a search.

Found some good photos and a fellow pelican who has done it. Going to be a PITA but I'm excited to get one step closer to a successful conversion! I really like the NA front end so I'm glad I don't have to swap :)

Will post pics in my build thread. Also need to show how I got the turbo radiator in there..but that was easy.

I have two front mount intercoolers that I used for my SC project that is no longer. Willing to sell either for cheap, PM me for details.

The second IC worked better for air flow and placement.

Yes it fits - with a little customization. A 931 vented header panel can be rigged up to feed it pretty well. I've done this on my '85.

I have a 931 front panel and an intercooler in my 85.5 NA - It took a little doing because for some strange reason the intercooler doesn't fit. The mounts are there (Strange), and fit the 951 intercooler just perfect. The intercooler tube connections fit perfectly through the radiator support area also. With the nose panel of the NA's that are to flat and will not let the upper front edge of the intercooler clear. So I had to cut the lower front section (Floor of the intercooler area) and fold it down for clearance. I also added extra bracing just in case...The flap that was cut can be folded back and welded back into position at a later date if I wish. A very wide "U" shaped cut in that floor area and the front folded down then all cleared...

Have pfun.

That's basically what I had to do - trim the sheet metal piece under the intercooler and shave the leading/top edge of the I/C. YMMV - this is on an early car.

Is that lower one from one of the early Reeves Callaway conversions?

I had one for a while - looks very similar.

on a Na setup would it really make a difference? to be putting an intercooler

nynor 11-16-2011 03:44 PM

i think he is planning on a SC/turbo setup in the future. just sayin.

Nynor, you wise man. Was it the sig that gave it away?? Lol I got the intercooler mounted up! Will post some pics on my build thread tomorrow. Next challenge will be the radiator since the intercooler interferes..

No, that is an aftermarket IC.
