1987 944 n/a Clutch issue (clutch fell to floor)

Hello to all,

Wondering if someone may be able to help me with an issue I'm having on my 1987 944 n/a 5 speed 140k. A couple of months the ago the clutch pedal would not return all the way and needed to be pulled up with my foot. This went away and appeared sporadically for about a month of driving (+/- 200 miles) and then finally 3 weeks ago the car sat in my garage for about a week and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor when pressed and stayed there. It could be pulled up by hand. A few additional points:

-I replaced the clutch slave cylinder following instructions from Pelican Parts and Clarks Garage
-I attempted to bleed the system although I'm not sure I'm properly doing it
-I did NOT replace master cylinder yet
-Clutch is still in same state. I have not installed the starter as of yet.

A couple of questions: Does the car need to be started to generate pressure for the brakes and the clutch? Meaning...should I try installing starter and get the car running, then check clutch again? Should I pony up and replace the master cylinder?

Thanks in advance. I'm in Reading, MA by the way if anyone's close and has any time

Check again for any leaks around the hydraulic lines, the Clutch Master Cylinder, and the Clutch Slave cylinder. Quite often the Master Cylinder will leak down at the firewall and the leaking hydraulic fluid can be hidden under the carpet on the drivers side there. If it is the clutch master cylinder leaking rebuild if possible, or replace, and bleed the system.

If there are not any leaks in the system you probably did not bleed the system correctly and separate air bubbles have coalesced to make the system non-operable. Bleed the clutch system again.

+1 to the above, probably clutch master...Most recommend changing all of them at the same time anyhow, eventually they will fail

+1 both of mine were leaking slightly but I wouldn't have known about the master slave untill i looked around where it comes into the firewall, it was a pain but I did both, and rebuilt my old one for a spare

Awesome guys. Thanks - I will probably end up replacing the master and re-bleed the system.

Will post progress.
