When filling with gas, pump constantly stops

When filling up at the gas station, if I have the pump nozzle all the way in, the pump constantly stops, like it senses the tank is full. If I pull the nozzle out a bit, then it pumps normally. Don't know if it's related, but I also get the gas smell in the cab when filling the tank over 1/2 full.

Ok, thanks. Could be the shut off valve. I'll see if I can find it and test that first.

I disconnected hose #10 at the resevoir and blew into it. The air came out of the nipple of the resevoir where I just disconnect the hose. Would that suggest that the air made it round trip thru all the components of the ventilation system, including the shut off valve, all the hoses, and the charcoal canister?
By the way, I have 3 hoses connected to the resevoir. Don't know what the 3rd one is, it's not shown in the diagram. (cabrio)

Some cars just do that. There's a spot on the pump nozzle that's supposed to "catch" on the collar in the filler neck (the thing with the hole in it that keeps you from putting diesel in). Sometimes you have to remove the nozzle a little to get it to catch/stop at the right place.

I'd say normal.

I've had my 968 for about 15 years and fill nozzles have always acted like you describe. Very likely normal (although a bit of a pain in the neck).

I've had mine a very long time and it didn't used to be like this. Only started recently.

It's definitely not normal. One of mine started to do this so I disconnected the vent pipe at the firewall and it fixed it. It's connected back up now and the problem is back but at least I know it's downstream of that pipe.

Problem is it could be any one of the vent solenoid valves in the engine bay, the carbon canister or one of the small vent vacuum pipes blocked. I just haven't got around to finding the culprit.

More than likely it's the pump not your car. I have issues like this with ALL my cars but only at certain stations and sometimes only certain pumps at the same station.
