Do earlier models have more road noise?
Well I notice when I drive my '83 I hear alot of road noise, not wind noise or anything, but I can hear the road, exhaust and tires. I heard some where before that the early models didnt have the sound deading material like the newer 944's do. Is this true,or do some of you newer model drivers hear road noise too? I know when I drive my fathers '80 928 I can hardly hear the loud exhaust note. I want the inside of my car real quiet,I bought some foil looking insulation and am in the process of getting un-lazy to put it in. When you cant hear alot of road noise it makes the car feel so much more soild to drive.
Any input? I need to know if mine is different or if I'm insanly picky. TIA |
I have alot w/ my early 85. It seems like most of the noise is tires, sunroof (wind), and tranny. My sunroof is actually quieter when its open. I have a feeling it will real quiet for awhile though--the head is sitting on my garage floor, and I dropped a nut down the water jacket.

To a point I would agree that the early cars are noisier. However they're also more appealing if you feel like having a purer drive as far as 8v 944s go...

Ahmet,
What do you mean a purer drive?? |
More feedback (through both higher noise and higher harshness). It's kind of appealing to be in a car that's more focused on driving, and less on the driver's comfort... But day in and day out it gets old. I've owned an early model, and a turbo as well as driving a number of other newer cars at the same time. I loved the 944 but a few hours at a time, and only when I felt like driving. Having to drive the early 944 after a long day, especially in traffic wasn't my cup of tea and that thing was my daily driver for some time (no AC either) in NC...

My 85.5 has quite a bit of road noise and I love it...my 968 is so quiet until you get on it. But the 944 has a more classical orsche sound and feel.

In my 1984 I can hear the transmission whirring and clicking just behind me... when I drive on mountain roads I can hear the clicking of the fuel injectors reflecting off the wall... My 1984 muffler may be a little blown out but the exhaust has a great low growl on acceleration and a slight cackle on deceleration... I think I can hear the springs moaning when I throw it hard around a corner... and even on the straits I can hear the rumble of the tires gripping the road. (on any of the above you may substitute hear with feel) If you don't understand any of this you probably don't know what it is to be "involved" with driving a car... but if you keep driving Porsches, you will. Had a ride in a 968, smooth, powerful, almost scary. a real "supercar" |
Yes, I too turn off the radio alot... and I would hate to have power steering- no ps gives so much more feedback I love it!

oh I also really love when you can hear the trans on shifts (ususally when going slow) One time I took out the sound deadening pad and spare/jack and carpet from the trunk(I was weighing everything) and it was so much louder! You should try it... Fun!!!!!
