Has everyone seen the new Mercedes SLS - Looks allot like a retro 1956 300 Gull Wing. Plus it has something that no one ever thought of before; It has a front mounted engine with a rigid torque tube and a rear mounted Transaxle - humm, sounds familiar.

my grandfather had a gullwing in the 60s, special racing version, 1 of like 29. Guess what happened to it, drunk teenage girl hit it in a parking lot and totaled it. Cracked the 20 gallon radiator and that's what totaled the car. Said he used to play with corvettes in Texas, make them think they're winning so they go faster and just hold them there until they blow their engines. About 20 years later he bought one of the first 944s, he always says its the best car he's ever owned!

Too bad your grandfather did not get to keep it, even as a conversation piece(gullwing).

yea but back then it was just a used sports car, not worth much at all....these days I bet it would've fetched over $500,000 because it was aluminum. The car didn't go to waste though, some guy bought it and had a new radiator made in Mexico. It's sitting somewhere in a rich man's garage I would hope. But he liked the 944 better anyway, I always find that cool!

The 944 is a better and safer driving car than that original Gull Wing beauty. It was simply an iconic sports car with poor driving qualities. When I saw my first 944 back in early '83 I was smitten. I loved the lines, how it fit my butt and how cool it was to drive, horsepower or not. I'm on my 3rd now and keeping this one as I slowly restore it to near new, but daily driver condition.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
