My 1st 944
Hello folks. Just wanted to share a brief story of how I ended up with my 1st 944, and how it was saved from being parted out.
Three years ago I had to close my VW repair/parts house in Bakersfield due to the economy kicking my butt and almost having a stroke. I ended up working for my competitor. He had traded a beat up Honda CRX for this non-running 85.5 944 before I had began working for him. It had lost a timing belt and lived a life of neglect to say the least. This car was originally sold in Chigaco. When I got to my new job, I saw the car and knew it had potential but didn't think much of it because the economy had wiped me out and didn't even think of owning any kind of P car. A co-worker had pulled the head off one night, and the head was sent off for repairs. A year later I put the head back on along with a new turbo water pump, new rollers, and Conti belts. But we couldn't make it run cause an injector had been lost during the year amongst other little things here and there. An 84 parts car had been picked up for some trade labor which helped. Anyways, I finally fired it up one night. Fixed vacuum leaks, fuel leaks and such. Another year passed and on my Bday last year we got the lien papers on it, but it sat in my garage at home cause there wasn't enough money to register it. Fast forward to my Bday last week, and I got the plates and tags to the car! Yeah. It was very emotional for me. As the son of a great mechanic following in his foot steps, being of german descent, and wrenching for many years I finally have my 1st Porsche. On the 1st night I owned it, I had to work late. It was dark and turned on my headlights and realized the clearance lights weren't on with the headlights on. Three blocks from my house, I smell wires burning in the dash. Parked in the driveway, shut the car off, and pulled the battery cables. The next day I saw the dimmer switch connector had melted. That was close. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Drove it to a cars and coffee event this morning. There was a 458 there. Wow. Parked next to a GT-R. But, I'm proud of my 944. It's not fast, it's not immaculate, but as a wrench, as a german car enthusiast, I love it...and it's mine. Thanks for letting me share. I hope to lean on my fellow board members for advice and encouragement. Eddie Brown Bakersfield, CA.

Thanks! Before I ever drove my own car I had already worked on a 951 (clutch job, TB) and my own car. I'm looking forward to a love/hate/love relationship with it. I love how it feels.

my first 944 is this 1987 n/a that i got for 3000. it has 83000 miles on it, i got a bargain! i love it and treat it very nicely, and have added a lot of extras to it. i think the carrera wheels are perfect for non turbo cars and i dont think i will ever want or need to change rims. the exhaust i put on is loud as **** and and makes everyone stare as i speed past...its perfect! the maraschino red is a great color and matches well with the tan interior... over all i got a 7/10 car for 1/2 the price

^^^^^ i had the coolest car at my high school by far, *****es love porsches! also idk if anyone can tell but the bumper was pushed in so i drilled the other shock and pushed the entire bumper in for a sleeker appearance, the 944/924/928 were plagued with the 5mph bumpers
