Buying first 924 - Questions/Problems - Help/Advice Appreciated
 

Hi guys,

My son has been a long time Porsche lover and now that he has turned 21 and he has matured, I am looking to get him his first baby to take care of.

The car I have found is a 1982 Porsche 924 T-Bar Automatic and the deal looks too good to be true, which is why I am a bit cautious.

The car has recently had the interior restored as well as the exterior paint resprayed which is why I am slightly concerned that there may have been an accident in its history which I will investigate tomorrow when I see it.

It has full log history which also shows that it was garaged from 1995-2005.

The odometer shows 95,000kms but I think its more likely 195,000 due to their only being 5 digits on the dial.

What are some common problems that occur with the 924 that I should look out for? Or what should I check when I see it tomorrow to be sure that I am not buying a lemon?

The asking price is $4,000 and I want to make sure its not going to die as soon as I drive it out of the driveway.

Any help or suggestions would be amazing and very much appreciated.

First off ,where are you located? normally 4k is way too much for a 924 but depends from what part of the world are you. In US 4k is 944 territory .

the early one's are not known for their auto"s stick with a 5speed...go to 924board.org..that's where you'll find mostly the 2.0 924's..77 to 82 here in the U.S..

If it's an automatic, that automatically decreases its value quite a bit. Less desirable.

There probably isn't a huge choice of those cars in Australia. Probably Australian cars had the full 125 bhp so peformance even with the 3 speed auto won't be too bad but even with a 5 speed manual they weren't exactly fast. The rubber damper for the auto trans. is expensive compared to a clutch, and labour intensive to replace, but not more so than for a clutch.
A friend in UK bought an 83,000 mile 924Auto in good running order last year for under £1000 incidentally. A couple of parts in the cold start circuitry were replaced with bits from eBay to ensure good starting.

I think if your son is 21 he should be looking for a car by himself.

If you decide what car is best for him, he may resent the choice.

it is a good car with less to go wrong and a lot less up keep then the 2.5...but it is much slower (ask me how i know) but very fun to drive.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif
