Porsche Crest 944 oil and water mixed

Hello All,

I am a proud owner of a 1990 944 2s Cabriolet, that I finally bought form a friend of my. I am new at this so I will need your help a lot 

The car has been at his garage for 4 years, we tried to put it to work on Saturday without success, so today I towed to a Porsche specialist to take a look.

First thing they found is that there is water in the oil and oil in the water. From what I am reading from you guys and in the internet this is a common gasket problem for this car.

They will look at it tomorrow and tell me the size of the bill. Do you guys know what the size of the bill could be? And what should be replaced? Please let me know, I am new at this and a bit lost.

Thank you very much, hope I will also be able to help you in the near future

Best Regards
GTM

Hello and welcome...
What price for this '90 S2?
Current miles?

Neither realized that the coolant and the oil were of similar color?

Let us know the labour estimate..
Cheers and good luck..
Mikey

Depends on whether they recommend replacing the head gasket, or the oil cooler gaskets.

My brother-in-law and I just replaced the o-rings and gaskets for the oil cooler on his '86 in about 2-3 hours. This is what I would replace first.

Replacing the head gasket is a bit more involved, and may take 4-6 hours, or more.

Good luck,
John

You say you have both "water in the oil and oil in the water". Normally these separate issues and you get one or the other. One is caused by a HG failure the other by an oil cooler seal failure. If you have both you might be in for a large invoice. Its also recommended that if you suffered water in your oil you should change the rod bearings.

I would also be concerned about the car "sitting for 4 years". These cars don't like to sit! Rubber bushes perish with sitting, fuel lines gum up, clutch disks stick, brakes bind, etc.

Wish you luck.

How good of a friend is he? I hope you got a discount on the car.

If the Porsche Specialist shop is straight forward they will advise you to change the rod bearings like 9FF suggested.
Porsche WSM work shop manual advises to change the rod bearings if water and oil mix.

This is expensive.

They should check to see of the coolant entered from the head gasket and ruined the cylinder walls and the piston skirts.

Head gasket and valve work on a 16 valve head===expensive at a shop.

DIY is an option.

It is too late but the car should have been inspected with a Porsche PPI-pre purchase inspection before purchase.

John

WELCOME ABOARD!! The Dealer is going to charge you book rate time for the jobs at hand. Costs anywhere between $95 - $125 an hour plus parts, shop supplies, any fluids, etc.. Before you even try to start the car the 4 year old fuel has to be drained out. The old Cam and Balance belts should be changed due to age, rollers changed and water pump changed. A Compression Test should be done to tell if it is a Head Gasket blown. This had to have happened with your friend and he parked the car without fixing it. The Oil and Antifreeze has to be drained and the Water Lines and Radiator flushed out. Porsche says the Rod Bearings should be changed, which means both front wheel suspensions and Cross Member removed to remove the Oil Pan. The other thing to worry about is the Cam Chain Tensioner Pads needing to be changed. Check for groove and cheaper to change because If the Plastic Pads go the Head has to be replaced, BIG $$$. If you get out the door under $2,500 count yourself lucky. Labor and Dealer Part Costs is why nearly all of us do our own work. We all use Clark's Garage.com for maintenance help at the link below. Read thru the whole thing and you will gain a better knowledge of how the car operates and the nomenclature of parts.
