Question Lets play "What the $%@# is it!"

A few days ago, I posted some questions about changing my thermostat on my 87 S. I was convinced that my thermostat was stuck in the open position and wanted to change it out before it failed in the closed. Had some time this evening to rip into it. When I removed the large output hose and peered inside.... I was baffled. The thermostat was held open by a small screw looking object. I removed the thermostat and removed the screw looking thing, tested the thermostat and all was well. My questions is.. What the hell is it? Since the water jacket is closed, it can't necessarily by a gear or chain piece from the oil side. It doesn't appear to be anything from the water pump. So I'm open for suggestions. All entertain all thoughts on this mystery.
Thanks Larry

Looks like a bike cycle spoke nut? Don't know how that would end up in your t-stat!

Either poor previous maintenance practices, sabotage or an German bike spoke from the factory? Either way, very strange and weird. Let me knwo if anyone else has any thoughts on the matter.
