Rebuilding Manual Rack

Is there a guide to rebuild it yourself? Has anyone ever done it before?

If not, does anyone know of a place that would rebuild a manual steering rack for a 944? I have one here for my S2 that I would like to put in my car, but I want to make sure it is like-new first.

Thanks,
Justin

there is realy nothing to rebuild in a manual rack unless you going to change it to a quaife quick ratio rack kit .

Actually, the U-joints wear out on the intermediate shaft (ask me how I know). And the gears in the steering gear box wear out after a long time. I would also like to know the answer to this question.

the warm gear at times will wear out when dart and grit gets in there . along with the little bearing at the end of the gear . but becouse a manual rack can be had from a bone yard for 75 to 125 dollars there not worth the time to replace parts . just clean and regrease it .

i know this is an old post - does anyone know how to remove the input shaft and worm gear from a manual rack - i've got it out of the car and i want to clean and re-grease it but can't see how this comes out unless force is applied - is the bearing what is holding it in - thanks

Put some vice grips on the splined shaft and turn counter clockwise and it will pop out once you turn it as far as it will move the rack. Obviously you need to take the top cover off.
