Odometer broken but not little drive gear
My odometer for my 1987 924S is not working. I followed the directions that I found at pelican parts and elsewhere. When I opened the odometer, I was expecting to see the little black gear broken or misplaced that everyone wrote about. However, the little gear in my odometer is red, not black and doesn't seem broken or misplaced.
The speedometer works fine and when I twist the end that plugs into the cable, the speedo needle moves. As I twist the end, I see the spinning motion on the very first gear and on the worm at the end of the first shaft, but the spinning won't transfer from the worm to the worm gear. Any suggestions? Grease all the gears? Mail the whole thing to someone that knows what they're doing? Who? |
Sounds like the problem I had. The supports for the shaft of the worm gear were worn enough that the worm did not engage.
You should be able to take it apart and add a shim to make it engage again. I made shims from a soda can and the fix has worked for the last 40,000 miles. Nigel |
McGuyver strikes again.

I had to use a drop of super glue to the worm gear shaft, as I could pull the worm gear off the shaft easy. It fixed the trip odometer.
