Strange noise, Clutch Related?

Car has been running great, no significant issues. I backed out of a parking space at CVS this morning and noticed a weird grinding, rubbing, scratchy sound of some kind. Kind of like a metal fatigue sound. First thought it sounded like a suspension groan or low frequency squeak you hear on an old car. Put in first and it did it again as I pulled away. Hmmmm…. started pondering everything on the way to work. Transmission? Loose CV bolts? There was no consistency and could not recreate the sound. Then it did it again at a stop light pulling away but not at all lights. With the clutch in or in neutral revving the engine causes no unusual sounds. I got to work and parked. Left it in neutral and pulled the emergency brake. Put it in first and slowly let out the clutch. Grind, groan sound was present and stopped when depressing the clutch. I guess that rules out suspension, transmission, but not the clutch. There has been no slippage of the clutch ever. Not the original clutch but I do not know the age. I bought the car form the original owner and he cannot remember or know the difference from rubber to spring clutch. What’s your opinions and further diagnostic tips?

Thanks Brian

Maybe you could look into the clutch inspection hole and take some measurements?

I had something similar. Turned out to be worn bushings in the shift linkage. Not a real big issue.

See if this additional symptom sounds familiar- if you gently put some rearward pressure on the shifter, does the sound go away?
