Fuel lines

So...old car, rotting lines, I'm sure...

Anyway, my car smells like gas. So much so that when I first showed the car to my boss, he warned me about smoking in it! lol It smells most fierce with a full tank of gas, and I've read about only filling it up halfway. That works to an extent, but it seems that the smell is actually getting stronger lately. So, I've decided to replace all the fuel lines in the back. Anybody who's done this job before can give me a basic idea of the difficulty level, and what all really needs to be replaced?

Thanks in advance.

sounds like the two check valves behind the fuel filler. not expensive and easy to change.

also does the car smell more of fuel when you turn while driving? could be a cracked charcoal canister or hose going to it.

but i would replace those check valves. remove rear cargo carpet, remove right rear carpet around the back side of the fuel filler tube. there will be a steel plate. combo of screws and nuts. it will glued down so get a razor black or long crapper and be careful not to damage yourself. and you will see the two valves. if i recall one is blue and one is white.

best of luck
Mike

Thank you for the info. And no, I've never noticed the smell getting stronger as I turn, but will attempt to keep my nose out for that!

Only one shut off valve on the 87, so don't go nuts looking for the second valve. It might also be a good idea to check the reservoir that the check valve line connects to.

The valve is available from Pelican Parts P/N; OEM-928201-083-02 Fuel Shut-off Valve $48.00

Also check the rubber connections for the fuel filler neck and the other rubber lines while your in there. Make sure you reseal that metal cover to prevent any errant fumes from entering the passenger compartment when your done.

That's ok, I wouldn't have known about the change, except that I pulled a fuel filler neck from an 87 about 2 weeks ago.

Holy Crap!!! I'm looking at the PET for the 83 fuel filler system, what a mess, there's 18 million hoses in there, only 6 hoses for the 85.5 on.

Can't help much with the hose replacement difficulty level.

On some years it's common to get a crack in the top of the gas tank. Maybe do a search on that.
