help cleaning up manual rack b 4 install
I'm doing a PS to manual conversion on 88 NA. Bought two used manual racks and intermediate shaft. Want to clean up rack b 4 install but can't remove the toothed shaft from housing to clean it. Removed the tensioner but shaft wont go out of housing past teeth. It has old dried grease in there i want to get out. Any help?

It will come out you just have to twist it, though I'm sure you've tried that. Just keep trying as the end of that shaft fits in a bearing and its probably seized. A bit of PB Blaster down there might help free things up. When you get it out replace that bearing and lube up with heavy grease. You can get the bearing at McMaster.

Before you can take the toothed shaft out of the housing, the pinion gear needs to come out. To do this I connect the intermediate shaft to it and hammer it out.
