$45,285 for a Porsche 944s2 ????

I just went to get my car plated here in Indiana. They use a system whereby the cars new MSRP is used for calculating the value for plates. We have a 1-17 value on cars and mine was, of course, a 17. They said the new car MSRP was $45,285. Wow, blow me over with a tornado. I had no idea these cars were selling for that much back then. The list showed a high end 911 Carrera listed for $51,500. This is for a car that was in line: 911 Carrera, 928 GT, 944S2, 924. back then. Wow, this must be one hell of a car. My other car, a 1985 BMW 635 Euro was about $43000 when new, so I guess I'm a little behind the times at these prices. Any thoughts?

In fact the price you they give you was for a base list 89 Coupe ,the Cab did worth a little more with a base list price of $52,650.00.This will be quiet a significant difference of $7,365.00 Cab versus Coupe.

In today's dollars the cab is a few shy of $90,000. 991 anybody? But it does make sense, so much of the car was handmade whereas today it's automated.

True, The prices escalated on these cars almost pricing themselves out of the market (IMO they did). If you look at the production numbers of the 944/951/968, the higher the price, the less they made.

Base price on a 944 in 1983 was under $20K less shipping.

I must be dense or just have common sense but why does it cost more to register a 1989 Porsche that a 1989 ford? Does a Porsche cost the state more money to be driven on the road than any other kind of car? wtf? It's 24 years old for chrissake.

well i never realized that my fathers w124 mercedes wagon was over 72,000 in 1994! which is a hell of a lot of money in todays standards, the price for the amount of car you get now is astonishing, not to mention you can find cars worth over 100,000 new like say a bmw 7 series for 2,000. now is a great time in used car history because before you know it all our 944s and other non-mainstream expensive cars will eventually go up and be worth what they really are, unless they are just beat to hell. other similar cars to the 944 are the bmw 8 series and mercedes sl from 1989-2002 which actually is a little mainstream

My 85.5 na was $25,189. Have the original window sticker. The gas milage sticker says 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with an estimated annual fuel cost of $782 based on 15,000 miles a year.

Yep, my comment was for Indiana and the stupid car tax system they have that penalizes those with expensive cars. Not the same system here in FL but my tags go up EVERY year on all my cars even though they are all getting older, doesn't make sense. Just happen to both be GOP states.

$150 billion in debt and budget shortfalls every year probably don't help the situation.

Anyway back to tags, why do we even have state tags with different costs and rules. Most other countries in the world don't have this? They are issued at the national (federal) level at the same cost throughout the country.

That 928GT was probably quite a bit more expensive at the time. Think the base GT price was around $76,500. The last 928 sold was in the $150k range new.

Strupgolf, How much did you pay for the plate? I'm sure part of what you paid was sales tax to the State of Indiana for the out of state purchase. I went out and got in the glove compartment and I paid $19.25 to the State of Indiana for my plates last year.
