1987 944 Turbo, both airbags deployed

Hey guys I need some serious help. I was out driving my 87 951 in the rain. I have never had a problem with my car sliding or losing control in the rain or snow. So I was coming up to a curve to get off a main road and I downshifted. After downshifting one of my back tires locked up and I slid off the road into the grass. That would have been fine, but with my ****ty luck there was a fire hydrant there. My right front corner hit the hydrant and both air bags deployed. My entire front trim piece came off, the right side bumper mount is pushed in and bent the metal behind it inward toward the radiator. The car started right back up and there doesn't seem to be any mechanical issues. I picked up my front bumper cover, put it in the hatch back and drove 30 minutes home. So now my windshield is shattered, the right headlight mount cracked in half, the passenger's side dash and glove box area are all bent up, I need a new bumper and mount along with the bumper cover and right fog light. Is it even worth spending thousands and thousands just on the airbags and it's system. I don't even know where to get new airbags. I didn't have collision because I was just about to switch to classic car insurance. So I have to pay out of pocket. I spent the whole summer rebuilding the head, HG, ARP head studs. Vitesse MAF, Fabspeed Exhaust, 55 pound injectors, larger Broadfoot turbo. So I'm sick over this. Can anyone give me advice about if it's worth putting in new airbags and how to fix the steering wheel and dash where the bags came out. Thank you, Kevin

First, Glad you are not hurt. 2nd, I suggest you have a professional body shop check for frame damage. What you describe above referenced the bumper mount concerns me.

3rd, if you do want to rebuild, I have a black non airbag crack free dash I can sell you.

That's rough. =/ I'm sorry.

Echoing what bumflick said, I would have a body expert look for frame damage. If there is any, it might be time to look for a new home for that nice motor of yours. =( Otherwise, I say ditch the airbags. I myself would never trust a 30-year-old airbag, and you'll have a heck of a time finding new, compatible parts.

I'm thinking about disabling the ones on my 88S. What's the best way to go about this? Disconnecting the airbag control module and the connections on the backs of the airbags?

Sorry about your bad luck Kevin, glad you are OK
Air bag delete/disable info can be found here.
Welcome to 944s2.com
I was never a big fan of them until last year when my wife's SUV got totaled by a idiot driver. Airbags deployed and she was OK I have them in my S2 and I have a really sweet non airbag steering wheel but can't bring myself to replace the airbag wheel and disable the system, guess I'm getting old. Kevin just proved they still work, after all they're German

The frame area under the coil and power steering reservoir is buckled a little. The strut towers are fine. I have pictures posted on Rennlist. Most people say that the frame can be pulled forward by one of those frame straightening tables. The bumper shock being pressed in is what caused it. Even if it's not perfect, I would rather fix this than find a roller with no engine. I was going to recover the dash anyway. I just need one that isn't bent up on the passengers side. Most people say it is fixable. It's not like I need an entire nose clip. It;s just that damn right side where the bumper shock crushed in. It's only less than an inch pushed back. The radiator didn't even leak.

My car was built in the summer of 86 for the 87 model year. So the 30 year old airbags worked. I didn't need them because my seat belt was on

That doesn't sound too bad. Can you link to your Rennlist post?

Too bad all of the pictures are gone. Thank you, Imageshack

I have details on how to put in a disable switch, but it's not for the faint-hearted.
