1985 (late) 944 cooling fans won't come on

My cooling fans are not coming on when the car gets warm - I did troubleshoot the fans, they work and I checked the fuses. Guess that leaves either the relay or the thermoswitch. Any thoughts on how to narrow it down further between those two?

jump the terminals on the thermal switch on the radiator - if the fans come on the switch is suspect #1

Probably the thermo fan switch you can troulbeshoot your issues here Clark's Garage Home Page (enter Garage Shop Manual ) then scroll down to "Troubleshooting" TS-02 cooling system.
