Power Antenna

Hey all,

I have run into a dumb problem; I just purchased a good used power antenna and am a little confused on the order of parts that assemble on the mast. I've labeled each part and am looking for any help. Thanks!

If I'm correct... slip #1 the collar on the shaft first then #3 the cam. The cam's teeth go down and contact the collar with the two flat shoulders pointing upward. Slip the assembly through the fender then place #4 the plastic base followed by #5 the chrome trim then #6 the cap nut in place. I believe #2 can be discarded, it is for a flat fender.

Since I'm not sure, I will try any suggestion so thank you very much! It actually makes sense as I was confused over part #2 placement.

Another question: Do the antenna leads run directly to the radio/power/ground? I found a wire harness with three butt connectors hanging in the fender. I think it's probably better if I replace the entire harness with new wires directly soldered to the antenna connections, no?

One wire should be the ground (brown).
One wire is always hot.
One wire is from the radio that is the signal for the antenna to operate.

Good luck.

Thanks! So I pulled the radio (fairly new Sony unit) that the PO installed, what a mess! I spent a fair amount of time cleaning up the wiring. There were a few wires with three or more splices. What's funny is that there was plenty of cable length to remove all the unnecessary connections. Many were hand wrapped and held together with electrical tape. I did reuse the factory wiring harness as it was still in decent shape. Black= ground, Red= hot, and White= radio output trigger. Its great great to have the proper antenna and get rid of that stupid dildo antenna that kept coming loose. I admit that working behind the front fender is a pain, especially without lifting the front end (laziness). The antenna came with a support bracket which took some time to figure where it secures to the car; there is a 12mm bolt on the back wall.

While I had the radio out, I connected the memory wire to a continuous hot lead so I don't have to keep resetting the unit each time I start the car. You gotta love PO's!! I did manage to get everything working before the sun went down so... Another item checked off the list.

Glad I could be of some help.
My son's 83 has one of these antennas.
He and his friends get such a kick out of it going up and down.
Me, I just see something else to break.

No disrespect intended.
