odometer gremlins
 

alright you Pelican Porsche heads, I need help and maybe one of y'all can help me. I haveworked on my odometer 3 times. I have the new gear and everything. the car is an 83 Base. so I hook the Odometer up to my Makita drill and spin it around and the speedometer works and the odometer clicks over correctly. both trip mileage and regular mileage work correctly. I reassemble the speedometer case and place it back in the dash and then drive down the road and then the odometer does not work, but the speedometer works. could there be something pressing on the inside of that case when you place it back in the dash that could cause the Odometer not to worI. I have running up to 20 miles on my bench without a problem but put it back in the car no dice.

My odometer gear would slide on the shaft. I used an epoxy cement for a fix.

I do not know if this is your problem.

thanks John for the advice but I already fixed the sliding shaft problem I don't know what is causingthe odometer to not work when it is placed in the dash. this is a real brain teaser.

I had this same problem shortly after fixing the sliding gear. I don't really know what is happening. I seemed like the outer brass colored shaft spins but the inner part doesn't. This is from memory, but I'm talking about the part where you hook up the drill (outer shaft) and where you plug in the speedo cable (inner shaft).

Anyway, I used the drill chuck to clamp down on the outer shaft area as hard as I could. I figured it would bind the inner and outer better. What I do know is I put it back together and it has worked ever since. But this was only about 1500 miles ago.

I hope that helps. Let me know what you think or what you try. I'll be curious in case mine relapses.

I had the same problem on my 1984 when I bought it about 5 years ago. The little gear slides to the end of the shaft and disconnects. I installed a little nut at the end of the shaft so the little gear when it slides will stop at the nut so it will not disengage. It works well, BUT, once or twice a year, the odometer randomly will stop and a few miles later will get going again for the next several thousand miles. I can live with that but would love to know why it does it.
