1987 944 and 924S Engine/Trans - Any Differences or the Same?
Are there any difference between the engine and transmission in a 1987 944 and 1987 924S?
|
Both the same.

I thought the 924s speedo was ran off the front left hub, and the 87 944 was electronic that ran off the trans?
|
The engine is almost the same, with the exception of the hole for the temperature gauge sensor (one is coarse, one is fine thread IIRC).
The transmission is almost the same, except that there is no speedo sender on the 924S transaxle. |
Doesn't the 924S have the shorter 5th gear?
Take care, |
Don't think so

The 924S does have the short 5th as standard, and most if not all 944's have the regular 5th. It's very nice to devour highway traffic without having to downshift much. I've heard the spec racing guys will pay a pretty penny for just the gear. There is no speedometer sensor on the 924S transmission, but I'd think it could be slightly possible some of the later castings were already drilled and just plugged. All 1987 and later 2.5L 8V engines have a slightly more aggressive cam. The 924S also runs the late style engine electrics with the exception of the coolant temp gauge sensor, but I'm pretty sure the threads are the same, so it should take either sensor.

Guys -- Thanks for the info
