Rear Window Trim Separating on my 944
 

Has anybody had this problem? It started out small when I bought it. It's now starting to spread across the top of the rear window. Is there any way to fix this?

I had this problem REAL bad. As a matter of fact it was raining in my car! So I went to a glass shop and for about $250~ they re-laminated the glass to the metal strip. I hear that 9xauto.com sells a kit for a DIY repair.

One of the biggest reasons the top of the rear deck glass separates from the frame is misadjusted locking pins.

The pins can put stress on the hinges and thus the top glass to frame bond.

I took a good rear lid off of an 86 and replaced the one on my 83 and found I had to shim the hinges and move the latches in the body to get it to close cleanly. This was after the seam delaminate! Drat!!!

There is a multi step process to get the glass to stick to the black adhesive. I just cleaned out as much as I could with a long X-acto blade, flushed with acetone and squirted in some fresh 3M car window adhesive wiping off the excess. I have a 90% bond and it's still holding.

Also if the rear shocks are new and stiff they will put a lot of stress on the seam. Some guys actually drill out the gas and use a nail to hold shock in the upright position.

Anyway, you can have a glass shop reseal or do it yourself with the 3M glass adhesive.
