Distributor cap screws
Is it just me or is the lower screw really difficult to fasten? 20 minutes with no luck so far. Top screw was easy. Any helpful suggestions?

If you look inside the cam gear cover you will notice the distributer cap screw hold down is lower on the right side.
I use a short stub screw driver with 4 sides on the handle. Position the distributer hold down latch against the cam cover projection. If I push in with slight force and turn CCW 1/4---one quarter turn, the cap fastener sides over the cam gear cover hold down. ![]() The headlight bar makes it difficult. J_AZ

I have an even better trick. First of all, remove and discard the round plastic piece that fits onto the metal cover. Then, remove the metal cover (the upper front balance shaft cover has to be removed) by removing the three 10 mm bolts. Now the distributor cap can be easily attached to the metal cover. Once that is done, reattach the metal cover to the cam housing.
I have run without the round plastic piece for over 20 years now with no problem...

Thanks guys. I invested in a new stubby screwdriver with a very broad blade and then the screw went in after 2 or 3 attempts. Annoying though that I had to buy a set of 8 screwdrivers to get the 1 that I needed( but only about $7 in total).

You might want to replace the distributor gasket (cheap part). Mine was allowing moisture in and caused the engine to run rough in wet weather.
I use a ball-handled screw driver for setting the distributor screws, which works very good. |

Yeah, for me I just use the screw driver and try to set it, took me also about 20 minutes first time. Now you just pop it in after a few tries... weird thing
