Please Help: 968 brakes on '83 944
Okay after researching I thought I had everything needed to put 968 brakes (non-M030) on my '83 944. I went to do the rears this morning with the intention of doing the fronts this weekend and the rear rotors do not fit at all. The rotors are way too deep and touch the caliper mounting bracket before getting close to seating correctly on the hub.
I thought maybe I can just use the rear hubs from a 968, I tried to slip the 968 hubs on, which look like they may be the correct length for the deeper rotor, but they have a different groove pattern on the inside. They have a bunch of tiny grooves (like the end of a torsion bar) rather than a few larger deeper grooves that are on the axle and 944 hub. Can someone please explain what I need to do to get these brakes on? And I already have the brakes and I thought all the parts so please don't turn this into a "the OEM 944 brakes are fine......just get some nice pads ATE fluid....blah blah blah" Thanks for any help. |

You dont say what other parts do you have to complete the conversion. So cannot really tell you what you are missing.
For the front you need: MY87+ struts MY86 Turbo spindles, hubs & flexible brake lines For the rears you need: MY85.5+ control arms, axles, hubs MY 86 Turbo caliper spacers. MY 86 Turbo brake hard lines You will also need the brake proportioning valve on the master cylinder. Last edited by 9FF; 10-03-2013 at 08:52 AM.. |

i think you're going to end up swapping everything from the CV outbound. you'll probably need to add a bias valve too, if you want to have any sort of balanced and controllable braking.

There is no need to change anything on the rear, they bolt right up. All you need are spacers, which can be substituted with a generic 1/2 inch washer.
Take note, you will have to drill the driver side '86 turbo spindle out to accept the speedometer cable. BTW, you need to use '86 turbo rotors in the back. The 968 rotors will not work.

BTW, you will also need 16in or larger wheels, some people forget that important part.

my comment was also strictly limited to be able to use the 968 rotors as a part of using the 968 brakes, which was the original question.
i believe the offset changes with the 968 rotors too. i was going to use some 951 aluminum hats and floating rotors, but they are quite different, and do not bolt up to the 968. |

Okay I will get '86 rotors so that I don't have to swap the entire back end out yet. And the valve. Thanks everyone.
