I recently purchased Porsche tool 9226. It holds down the camshafts while the bearing bridges are removed. It came with two template-like pieces. Does anyone know what these are for? Obviously they have something to do with the cam lobes, but what exactly? Are they used for timing? Are they used for checking the runout of the lobes? They are not mentioned in the factory manuals anywhere.

Did you get 9226 or 9248? 9248 holds the cams in place while you do the bearings - you use the bolts from 9226 to hold them in place.

Well when I called to order them from the Porsche dealer, the guy told me that 9248 isn't available anymore, but that 9226 included everything I needed. So I just bought 9226. When it arrived, everything was there. The bolts have 9226/1 printed on them, the parts that hold down the camshafts have 9226/2 printed on them, and then there are two rectangular template like pieces. One has 9226/3 on it and one has 9226/4 on it. They are thin rectangular pieces of metal (about 2 or 3 millimeters thick) that have two cutouts each. On one of them by one cutout is printed A1 and by the other cutout is printed E1. On the other A5 is printed by one cutout and E5 is printed by the other cutout. Like I said, the cutouts fit on the cam lobes. If I put the pieces on certain cam lobes, the flat part of one of the pieces almost rests on the top of the head. So I thought at first that they had something to do with timing. But then I thought about it and I figured that that wouldn't really work because the valve timing is slightly different for each motor and also the cam lobes wear slightly. I'm not too worried about it because I don't think I need them to take out and reinstall my camshafts. However, I am curious as to what they're for.

They are used for a visual check of camshaft position. If memory serves, one of them is for a 911/930 and the other is for the 944S - can't recall off the top of my head which one is which - if you call the dealer they can tell you.

If that is indeed true, then I think I know which one is for my car. One of them almosts rests perfectly on the head when it is placed on a certain cam lobe. The other, although it fits on the cam lobes, doesn't really line up to anything. Thanks man.
