New guy intrested in a 83 944 coupe

Im intrested in this car but here is what the seller says about the transmission.

It's physically hard to move the shift from side to side but easy up and down. The clutch engages great and there's no slippage or grinding going into any gear.

Does this sound like a common problem and are we talking major cost.
I realize its hard to tell without driving but any help would be great

It could be as simple as the plastic bushing at the base of the lever to the linkage on the trans, both easy fixes. Even if it is the trans internals you are only looking at ~$300 for a used trans for these cars, plenty around, DIY afternoon swap.

I would assume the worst and offer $300 below the price you were going to offer if everything else pans outs.

If you do buy this car and whether you keep the tranny or not, I'd recommend getting the short shifter sold at "online944.com". It's around $80 and you'll be amazed at how much better the shifting feels when it's installed. It's a quick install and you only have to remove the rear driver's side wheel and (I recommend lowering the muffler shield for better access--two small bolts) making the swap.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I will lean towards 9FF's reasoning. It's an easy replacement and, if the shifter rod is original, replace with a new one (unless you go for the short-throw unit) and experience a world of difference! Welcome to party...
