87 S ignition timing

Where does the DME determine it's ignition timing from on an 1987 S model? This motor has a speed sensor and reference sensor on the flywheel, AND a hall effect sensor behind the distributor. I seem to recall reading that if the hall sensor is bad, the timing rolls back 6 degrees. Static timing at idle is listed as 10 +/- 2 degrees, mine is at 8. I would like to get it back up to 12 and have considered making the cam gear housing adjustable but I'm not certain if that's where the timing signal comes from. If not from there, then what is the hall sensor for?
