Question 944 wheel question...

I'm looking for new set of wheels for my 83 944, and i guess only porsches made 5 on 130mm bolt pattern.. so am i stuck with just few porsche wheels that fits that bolt size, or can i do something about and put something else in, for say by using wheel spacers??? any suggestions? cause i'm not big fan of 15' inches.. :P ack..

p.s. do these look good to you guys at all?????

You can use just about any wheel that will fit the bolt pattern. Yes, you can use spacers.

The link youo provided pointed to a steering wheel - I thought it looked pretty good. You need a 24mm socket to remove the steering wheel.

Most any steering wheel is better than the stock 83's. Even Pep Boy's Grant brand. I still have the Fittipaldi Signiture steering wheel that I bought in 1978 for my first 924. With a new leather cover. Still can get the style at Personal. They now call it a Fitti.

I have some fairly wider rims on my 83 and didn't have to change the spacers that come on the 83.

Currently 245/45 16 rear and 225/50 16 front.

Thinking of going 245/50 16 and 205/45 16. Larger diameter on the back, narrower and smaller diameter on the front.

The 245's have about the right width for the rear rims while the 225's sidewalls bulge too much for the fronts.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Hey Socal

How wide are your wheels? What size rim would accommodate a 245 section rear?

I'm getting more and more interested in replacing my 15x7 phone dials with some fuchs 15x7 fronts and 15x8 rear with some 245s in the rear and 215s up front

Don't care much for larger rims when they don't need to be...had some Borbet Type A's with (17x8.5 fronts with 225 45s, and 17x10s with 255 40s). The rears had a whopping 3-inch lip! They made the car look scary mean (the look from the rear scared the hell out of the ricers--nobody wanted to drag race me), but were so damn heavy, it slowed the car down too much. I took them off and stored them in the garage. I'm gonna get them refinished and perhaps sell them--anybody interested?

Well looks like the fronts are about 8" as the tread surface of the 225's match the outer edge of the rims while the tread of the 245's in back are noticably within the width of the rear rims -- possibly 10" for the outer edge of the rear rims.

Can't remember if a rim is called from the outside or the inside.

I've been using http://www.tirerack.com/tires/SearchTires.jsp to search for sizes against mfg's and prices.

As to the correct match to your rim; the one thing that sticks out in most of the FAQs I've looked at is to NOT have a bulging sidewall. The oposite, a highly slanted side wall is not good either.

My objective is to stay as close to the stock diameters or slightly smaller and NOT rub my suspension or body panels.

Cool

SoCal's wheels look even better in person!

I'm plotting to get him drunk and con him out of them.
"Oh my cookie cutters are sooo much better than those wheels, but because your my buddy I swap you straight across!"
I wonder how many bottles of wine this is going to take?

You mean you don't know for sure? Aren't the sizes embossed on the rim? I see that those aren't aftermarket, so what's the part number?

Well just bothered the heck out of a couple of tire brokers and seem to have come up with some answers.

The tire sizes on the rims and measuring the rims give us 8" in front and 9" in back. So these rims are from an 89 944S???

They have sizes; 225/50 16 front and 245/45 16 back on them right now. These are what was on them when they came on the 86 944.

No I have not checked the part numbers. I may when the rims are off for fresh meat.

Mine has stock 83 suspension with the delivered factory spacers.

I have no rubbing that I can tell.

I'm finding that it's best to go to the manufacturers web sites and use their data sheets. I don't mind keeping the 245/45's in the rear even though they are just a hair smaller in diameter than what is "stock" for the car. I do find the 225/50's in the front a bit "bulgie" and visually larger than I would like to see so I'm considering 205/50's for the fronts.

So far I'm getting quotes in the $550 to $650 rage installed on Bridgestones and Perelli's. I'm not picky about tires and will consider the "less expensive" brands.

Any suggestions?

PS: Scott -- No way!!! I paid $500 for these rims! Well I also got an engine, rear hatch, aluminum suspension, front fender group, electric seats, rear view mirrors, automatic transmission (Todwic), two gearbox sunroof drive (Scottmandue), air control unit (eBay), rear bumper, misc interior trim pieces, complete doors, sunroof (Todwic), hood hinges (Todwic), and more.
