Video: Making the Porsche Tool 9262/1

Hi,

the video shows you how to make the Porsche tool 9262/1:

Working with a Mini Lathe

The tool is used for mounting the oil thermostat housing at the 944 from model 87 onward.

The video has a German soundtrack but English subtitles are added to YouTube. If you don't see the titles by default, watch the video directly at YouTube and press the subtitle button below the video.

Enjoy it,

Jürgen

As usual, Jurgen, you have produced another great video project for those who have access to a lathe.

Cheers,
Larry

Well done Jurgen. Makes me want to dig out the lathe and mill, even if I don't need the tool.

Great Video again!

Why does it have to be made out of steel for the "one car owner" and not a full time mechanic? Think of the Clutch Alignment tool. Is your clutch tool made of steel or plastic?

This is a limited use alignment tool and very little pressure is applied in aligning the oil cooler.

I did photo copy the specs with credit to Dr944S2.
Thanks to Dr944S2.

John_AZ, good point, there's probably no reason it couldn't be made of Delrin acetal or maybe even Nylon. Guys with lathes usually have more junk steel lying around than plastics, though. At least I do - the only plastics I have are left over from making my CNC machines.

This is great! Does anyone have the same sort of dimensions for the early alignment tool (P218)?

Hi,

you are right, steel isn't necessary. With plastics I'm not sure because of cutting the thread. Brass would have been the ideal material, but I didn't had a blank of the right dimensions at home.

Regards,

Jürgen

Just not as fancy as Dr944S2

Soon someone will use his 3D Printer and make a few...

Don't use plastic to make the tool. Since you have a choice, and don't need to worry about durability for lots of usage, best bet would be to make it out of the same material as the
oil thermostat housing which I think is aluminum. Use the same material for equal thermal growth.

I learned this lesson early in my engineering career. I had the shop make some parts for internal workings of a mass damper for a long/large diameter face mill adapter. Got the parts back from the shop. Had them in my pocket walking back from the shop. Tried to slide the parts into the bore in the bar and they wouldn't fit, the plastic parts were too large. They were supposed to be a close fit in the bore; due to the rise of 20 degrees from being in my pocket the plugs had expanded enough that they wouldn't even start in the bore. Still remember my embarrassment when I realized the mistake I'd made. Had the parts remade out of steel.

If someone uses a 3D printer (ala MakerBot or similar) to actually make something more useful than a flower pot, it'll be a first.
