Transmission Type Question
My 89 needs a new transmission (used actually). I have done many transmission swaps, generally for the same model types though. Is there any reason why a common 5S would not be able to be used in place of the factory ASG?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

PorscheChef:
What are the particulars of your 89? is it 2.7L? or S2 or Turbo? Would really need transmission code to distinguish gears and final drive. Later...

Transaxle - General Information, Codes, and Gear Ratios
The ASG is a tighter gear spread with a shorter 5th gear ratios. Lower top speed but better acceleration.

Had no idea there was a gearset like that.
Was the NA sold anywhere after 89? |

The ASG transaxle in the 2.7 looks to have identical gear ratios as the 944S.
You could use the readily available 5S, and you'd get slightly better acceleration from it (3 to 7 percent) in gears 1 through 4. That's pretty negligible. 5th gear will be a heck of a lot longer, something like 14 percent! Better highway/cruising gas mileage. Honestly, my #1 complaint about the 5S, is the huge gap between 4th and 5th. It's about as tall as the Turbo 5th. Only on the Turbo, at least the other gears are spread out evenly.

I have a 5S with short fifth gear available if you need one.

Thanks Dimi, Plyhammer has one and he is only about 2 hours away. I would think the shipping cost would be pretty high for a transmission. I appreciate it though.

Conflicting info on the two pages regarding gear ratios.
The Racer X link claims the 88 and up 944 NA, and 924S, to have short 5ths. They don't. Not in USA, Canada or Japan. 85.5 and up ROW 944 NA and 924S do have the short 5th. Also, the 2.7 NA has the same same ratios as the 944S. If going the speed limit here in BC on the highway, 100km/h, it's hard to pick a gear with the long 5th. 4th gear puts you at 3500rpm, while 5th drops it to 2300rpm. 4th gear in the Turbo is 3000rpm at 100 km/h.

Racer X link is correct. All 924s have short 5th, as does 1988 944. (in the usa) 944s and 89 944 also have short 5th as the gear ratio for 5th and final drive are identical to the short 5th 924s/88 944 gear box.

but while the 89 does have a short 5th... (the same short 5th as the 944S and 88 NA) gears 1 through 4 are only the same as the ones in the 944S, NOT 88..... or any others. and the two pages do contradict each other. If you say Racer X is correct, than Clarks Garage is wrong because it claims the 5S and 7V transmissions came in the 88, and had a "long" 5th in Canada, USA, and Japan.
