944 motronic electrical detail; help?

my 1987 944 has no spark. I am somewhat board level savvy and have little cash to buy ECU (800$+?). Died twice for 3-4 min over one week, then complete loss. The motor dies instantly at stop or last while driving. Coil is checked good, sensors replaced, relays supply 12V to both locations on board. I believe that the 'CDI' portion of the board may be bad, but dont have detail schematic to check. Can anyone help with this detail or experience to get next step to solving what I believe to be a relatively inexpensive solution by replacing a component. Who rebuilds these boards? Can this really be a ground problem? Where specifically to check? Is the diagnostic port of any use for this problem, or without a diag. machine? Am I totally missing something?
