Single loud knock from rear
Like the title says. When I corner hard in my 87 951 I hear a single loud knock in the rear like something is in the back that slams against the side of the car. I've opened up the spare tire area and everything is secured there. Only happens on a hard corner and I don't recall if it's only when turning one direction or both. Does not happen very often. No noise or vibes at high speed.

Have you checked the CV joints?

Have not checked the CV joints. I'll get underneath it next weekend. Will I be able to see/feel if they are bad without removing the axles?

Before you do anything, REMOVE everything from the trunk, cubbies, and spare tire well. It could be that something is loose there.
Other than that, what would cause a single loud clunk are the exhaust system or the transaxle. Probably not the CV joints.

Also check the shock upper attachments and muffler system for security. Also check to ensure gas tank is secure.

my bet's on the shock or some other suspension piece.

It could just be the body shifting on the rear suspension when you go from a left to a right hand turn. My car does that on the track.
It is likely due to 25 year old rubber bushings and such in the rear linkage, if the other stuff checks out OK.

Today I got underneath the rear and everything looked and felt secure, tight, etc. I can move the axle shafts axially but could not feel any fore and aft looseness. I held the axles at each end of the axial play and turned the wheels a couple revs and all felt ok. Just curious, how much movement should the transmission have? I grabbed the back end and can move it around on the rubber mounts; maybe a half inch at the most. Is that normal? Is there a need to repack of the CV joints? I used to do that on VWs back in the day and assume these are similar. Have not removed the spare and tool kit yet to see if by chance that causes it, I doubt it but will try that tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas.
