The drive gear dry-rots and falls apart. You have to remove the gauge cluster and take out the speedo. Its relatively simple, the gears are inexpensive and there is a write-up on clarks garage

If your car is a 82-85.5 944 or 86-88 924S, the speedo is cable driven. Take off your front drivers side dust cap on your wheel (porsche crest cap), and see if the cable is still attached to the cotter pin. If it is, then your speedo gear has broken or slipped off some.

Note: when you take the cluster apart and get to where you need to remove the needle on the speedo, pull the needle at the hub with a slight twisting motion. Install the same way. The needle is a slip-fit and if you're careful it won't be damaged. Also, remember not to reset the mileage while the car is in motion. Have fun.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
