Speedometer
Hello all. Anyplace to send out he speedometer from a 84 944? MPH is off, needle bounces at slow speed. The odometer and trip meter work sporadically. More not than anything...
Thanks |

Have you tried just changing the cable? It drives off the DS front wheel and what you're describing is indicative of a worn cable. Maybe do that before you send out the speedo. The odo issue is a small gear inside the speedo wearing out. It can be changed if you don't mind cracking your speedo open. Much has been written about this, as it's so common. Just be sure you get the right replacement gear.

You can lubricate the cable to alleviate the bouncing - at low speeds, the friction in the cable has a noticeable impact on the angular velocity along the length of the cable.

I recently sent my speedo/odometer to North Hollywood Speedometer. Very happy with their work - fast and done right. Got a new bezel and dust cover too. All for less than $200.
The bouncing needle is caused by the need of new lube in the cable housing. Mine had a molded plastic piece on the upper end that prevented it from being pulled out. Heated a steak knife and melted / sliced right through it so the cable could be pulled out from below (RF dust cover). |

What work did you have done at NorthHollywood speedo?
Rebuilt speedo? i thought they were closer to the $500 range but $200 is a bargain. |
