Noise
1984 944 base. I have a whining sound from the engine compartment. Thought it was the belts, tried belt dressing, didn't work. Opened power steering res. to check fluid. It was full, but while the engine was running there was no movement in the fluid. Steering seems to be ok . Should that fluid in the reservoir have some sort of movement?
I could take the belt off the pump and see if the noise is still there any thoughts? Thanks for all help. |
The belt in these cars is complex and runs over a few things all of which could whine on their own aside from the belt its self whining over them. Depending on when the last time the belts were changed you may be up for a FOES (front of engine service)
Could be the water pump Could be the AC belt If memory serves the PS fluid is fead into the unit and not returned. I Could be wrong about this but something in the back of my mind right now is remembering only one hose running from the tank to the rack and nothing back. Regards Dave |
If you know what you're doing...
1) Remove the Power Steering belt. Whining stopped? Yes, that was the problem. No, go to step 2. 2) Remove the Alternator/AC belt. Whining stopped? Yes, that was the problem. No, go to step 3. 3) Remove the Balance Shaft belt. Whining stopped? Yes, that was the problem. No, go to step 4. 4) Do not remove the timing belt. If you don't know what you're doing... take it to someone who does. |
how long have you owned the car - is this a new sound you have not heard before - I've always thought these cars are a little whiny - even when they're running correctly - I think it comes from the toothed belts (timing and balance) - do the above - should help you figure it out - but keep in mind it will probably always whine a bit
