1984 timing belt/water pump upgrade
I know there are numerous threads about timing belt replacement. I have a slightly different question, however, and I need your advice. I purchased a 1984 944 NA with 57K miles. Won't drive it until I replace the timing belt, balance belt, rollers and water pump. I don't know whether it's the updated pump, but if I'm replacing everything, shouldn't I look for a kit with the updated pump and corresponding belts an rollers? Can you suggest a part number/source for the kit, or would I just order the kit for an 85.5 and up?

The older (83-85.5) pumps are getting harder to find, but out there. Forget if Pelican sells them, or they might be NLA here. The updated pump has another opening for a turbo pipe. The updated one comes with a plastic block, and must be drilled out for a turbo, left alone for the other models. The updated kits come with a 52mm idler? roller, and the older models with a 46? mm idler. I think the updated WP kits come with the belt guard.

Just FYI, there have been a couple of threads about the mentioned seller in the link water pumps. They are selling LASO pumps. LASO pumps can be bought anywhere---even on Pelican. Some sellers have the LASO remanufactured. Prices vary. Make sure to check and ask questions. I am not sure but the long time rebuilder they used no longer is available. ? I have omitted the sellers name because I may be subject to a 5 day "timeout" by Pelican. ![]() John

thekidd an John_AZ, thanks for the insights. I'm aware of the differences in roller sizes when an upgraded pump is installed. If I'm hearing you correctly, providing I'm changing out the whole works (belts, rollers, pump, etc.), I can order the upgraded pump and associated belts and rollers for my 84 NA. Maybe it was on Clark's, but I saw somewhere that installing the old style pump is not recommended. Let me know if I'm not understanding this clearly.
