gross error on fuel gauge
My fuel gauge is indicating full when there's only 1/2 tank and when there's no fuel in the tank and the low fuel warning is on, the gauge shows 1/2 full. The fuel level sensor was checked and it's indicating proper gradient of resistance and the grounds under the dash have been cleaned and I still have the issue.
I noticed that there's a potentiometer next to the gauge itself and wanted to know if that's an adjustment for calibrating the gauge. I have an extra gauge (white face) and could compare the two. Any ideas?

Have you tried moving the gauge needle through the range from empty to full by hand? The needle can be twisted on the gauge head if it is not moving in the correct range. |

What is it about these gauges? I had to correct a battery voltage on a previous car by moving the needle. I guess I'll try that after I get the motor running. Found a shorted speed ref sensor harness connector. Waiting for the part. Wife found some other projects for me too.

something to try
Another member here Brent, forgot his forum name, showed this to me and it worked great. Take the fuel float mechanism out of the gas tank ( from the hatch area, a couple bolts and 2 wires). It is a cylinder like from a paper towel roll. There is a nut on the bottom. We notched a cheap screw driver and used it to unscrew the nut on the bottom- looking at it you will understand. A long bolt all the way through the cylinder comes out. Then you can gently pull the cover off from the top.
The mechanism comes up with the cover. It is 2 fine rods and wire, be careful they are very small and easily bent / broken. The fuel guage works by resistance on that wire that goes the length of the tube, but it gets corroded/dirty over time. He recommended carb cleaner and it worked great with maybe a very gently wipe with a paper towel. Mine was 50% black with crud and went to copper color. That's all, reassemble carefully. The guage works great and full range now. Chuck ( with help from Brent) |

Thanks for the info. I did a complete clean, diagnostic and re-install of the sender and it's definitely the gauge.
