Oi!

I think I've blown my head gasket. #2 cylinder has little compression, and I have exhaust fumes in my oil, so much so that my dipstick keeps popping out. When I pull the cam cover plugs I got lots of exhaust fumes comming out of there. Poured a little gear oil into the cyl. and compression value went almost to normal. I thought the rings may have callapsed, but all the other cyl. are normal. Thoughts?

Unhappy ARRRGH

Dipstick popping means pressure inside the crankcase is has gone up to unacceptable levels - the only thing that can raise crankcase pressure is combustion gasses getting past the rings

It is possible that a head gasket could be the culprit. However, you should see bad compression across two cylinders rather than just one.

By putting gear oil in the cylinder, you are effectively "sealing" the rings, allowing compression to rise.

Sorry....

FUNGOOL!!,
I'd take a poke at cracked piston, or bad piston ring, or possibly you were high and drove without oil maybe ?.. hehee..
not the head gasket though.. you'd see a deteriating level of compression along all of the pistons..
I've had this happen to me before in my (gorgeous) 70 el Camino!!
I blew (bent) a rod and F'd up #1 piston, it knocked like hell and the dipstick never sat right again.. so, I sold her....

good luck

That's what I was afeared of. Someone grab a bugle, it's time to blow taps.I'm gonna take the head off tomorrow, find out exactly how bad I killed her.

Why worrie? Used blocks are cheap, you seem to be up to just about any task, it's not that bad to change.

Locally I know of two possibly three low mile engines for around $500. Great to be in the west where %50 of Porsches production winds up.
