Porsche Crest After market cv halfshafts

I need cv half shafts, I found some deals on cv's for $75 clams each side, somone told me that they were made in china and they would fall apart after use, when I drive my 951 I sometimes hot rod it, would the auto-zone, or pep-boys 944 style cv's work in a more powerful 951?, I'm on a limited budget nowadays. any help would great!

They probably are made in China, but so is almost everything else the Auto-store "house brand" carries.

If the China axles break, they come with a lifetime warranty, don't they?
5 minutes to swap axles in the auto zone parking lot, and carry on...

You can get made in USA axles/CV joints for the 944.
It's all just VW dune buggy/bus type stuff anyways.

But they cost about $700...or more.

Accordingly the bearing races will disintegrate in the cheap ones if you push them very hard.

I used EMPI's on mine the last time. That was almost 10 years ago. I got a set of 4 for a great price. Unfortunately, I cannot remember for the life of me how much. I think it was under $150 for all 4. The price was the reason I jumped on them.

Aren't the turbo and NA joints different?

So turbo and n/a cv half shafts are the same, when I replace them I want them to last, I don't race the 951, but I do hot-rod the car sometimes, I am looking for good strength with out breaking the bank.

People seem to have had good luck with Vanagon half shafts. I think under $150 for both, IIRC from what I read.

I'm pretty sure that most half shafts that you can buy will more than handle the horses that the 951 will put out. Short of a $10 set of "Wang Chung Linglong "specials that is.. LOL

Coincidentally, the 944 CV bearing is the same bearing used on the primary driveshaft (both ends) on the Audi 5000 Quattros. Ask me how I know.

The joints are the problem...the shafts are fine...
there's always 930 stuff if you've got the dollars.

Fwiw I could kill a set of cardone remans in about 3 months....went back to gkn and they lasted about 1-1.5 years. Moved on to chromoly shafts (thanks xschop) and paired them with empi joints, haven't broke one since. Whole time I have been running a semi-solid trans mount.

Also never broke a shaft, always an inner joint (usually passenger side). I was under the impression these chromoly shafts give, more shock resistant than just hardened steel which led me to believe these were helping to wear out the joints faster.

I road race the Empi units on my 450HP LS Franken44. They are cheap enough to replace them frequently. I've haven't broken any, though I've seen some pitting after a year of use. Moving to Neo synthetic grease helped the wear a bunch.

Sorry, missed this.

Talk to these guys: Dan's Performance Parts - VW Buggy and Offroad Parts VW Parts. Very knowledgeable, even if most of it came from off road buggies (which often use vanagon/944 axles!).
