Price of Balance Shaft Belt

Received a coupon of sorts in the mail from PCA where PCA will pay 100 dollars if I spend 200 at a Porsche dealer. Naturally I jumped on it. To my utter shock, the dealer wants 133 dollars for a balance shaft belt for a 944turbo. Mail order places sell them for around 30 bucks. Truly amazing!

Pretty sad.

based on personal experience (I order parts from Porsche) dealer prices are about 40 - 50% markup.

(OEM belt, $44)

I have heard that only original Porsche, and one other (OEM) belt manufacturer have updated the belts with extra fibers in them. I've never used a dealer belt on either of my 944, no belts breaking to date (combined miles over 70k I believe).

hmm.... I went to an independent shop inquiring about a timing belt and balance shaft belt (why not) and they quoted me $300.00 with labor included. Does that sound right??

They'll put it in and tension it for $300. That is an amazing deal.

$300.00 US Dollars?! My mechanic said $900.00 to redo the belts, update the water pump and do the front seals.

Replacing the balance shaft belt and doing a waterpump as well as front seals are VERY different jobs...

Belts replace and tension is about 300 - 350

Water pump and seals is VERY different - a few hours labor just to get everything off..

900 seems a little steep - 700 is about right for that
