Help! 16v cam bolt removal

I'm having a devil of a time removing the bolt holding the camshaft sprocket on my 944S2.
How should I counterhold the camshaft? (The big "nut" is really a washer.)
Is that bolt frequently put on with Loctite?
Can I raise the front of the motor so I can access the bolt with an impact wrench?
thanks in advance,
Chris

Ok,... you have to counter the big washer while trying the get the bolt out. You have to counter the bolt to keep from turn the cam gear. If you turn the gear gear enough you could bend your valves. SOOOOO, if you can find a way to keep your cam gear from turning other than countering the big hex washer you can use a plumbers wrench on the bolt Thats what I did Becarful with the plumbers wrench. You could break the head of that bolt off. The bolt should NOT have locktite on it. I replaced my bolt with one from home depot. All you have to do is respect the strength of the bolt and make sure the head will fit under the DIS ROTOR. You can also, use a hammer and tap the head of the bolt to break the threads free. Although it makes sence, I dont know how well it works. It did it,... gently. Good luck.

Thanks. A friend suggested leaving the sprocket on and removing the cams. Anyone tried that?

I think if you remove the cam cover you can actually use a key to hold the CAM from moving while trying to remove the bolt. Best of Luck.

I would not remove the cams with the cam gear still attached. Those cams are like $800 for the each of them. You really want to take that chance? Dude, getting the bolt off isnt that hard. Just kepp the cam from moving and wrench it off.

Maybe your bolt wasn't that hard but this one is kicking my *ss! I'm afraid I'll bugger the bolt trying to remove it. If I remove it attached, I can impact it off and put another in there with the correct torque.

Your going to impact it off without scratching or gouging the lobes? Dude, work it off. Mine was enough of a pain that I had to create a post just like this one Work the bolt in both directions with the plumbers wrench. It will come out.

A friend came by to borrow a manual this afternoon. With him holding the cam I was able to get the bolt out. It took a lot of force. With the cam cover removed you can get a wrench on the cam itself.

True,... I forgot about at. Ont eh cam itself there are certain places on the cams where its hexed. Replace the bolt with one from home depot. One witha hex head. Make should it is the same strength. Good job!
