Advice for Long Trip

Am I crazy to be jumping in my '83 944 and driving it 1000 miles for 15 hours straight?

I've just done the timing and balance belt. I plan on purchasing a back up fuel pump relay this evening.

Any other suggetions on what to do before a long trip?

No way your crazy! DO IT! I did 2500 last summer, back and forth to California. I also carried a spare DME relay, actually I always have a spare.

Here is what else I took:

Spare hose clamps, 2
Extra coolant
Oil
Various tools (metric wrenches, socket head bits)
Roll of "Racing Tape."

Keep an eye on the oil level. Older engines just love to use it up.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

It will actually be 2000 miles round trip.

I just tightend up all of my hose clamps last night.

I'm planning on bringing duct tape, various tools, oil and coolant as well.

It's good to hear these cars can still make a trip like that.

If it doesn't make it at least you'll find out what to fix next.

This is very true.

I wish I was going to Vegas, but I'm actually going back "up north" to visit family and friends.

I'm thinking I'll bring that list of Porsche people with me too. Do you think anyone actually uses that thing?

Haha, this is kind of pathetic, but the longest I've driven my car in the 3 years of ownership is 160 miles or so straight. I drove from CT to Boston for July 4th 2 years ago, and then back the next day. Other than that, I don't think my 944 has even made it past Hartford in one direction or Fairfield in the other, let alone actually leaving CT! I do drive it for hours straight sometimes, on the back roads in Burlington, Avon, or Farmington, but the car hardly ever leaves a 50-mile-or-so radius from my house!
