well I finally bought one....trans noise

Well I finally bought an 83 944 for my sons and I to restore.

Picked it up for 1600.00 including tax, title, and reg.

It had new timing belt and waterpump, all calipers rebuilt with new pads and rotors, steel brake lines and a bunch of other odds and ends.

Having said that it is a bit of a basket case as the PO was going to use it as a track car so most of the interior is disassembled, headlight motor is out of the car etc.

Basically the car needs some of everything which is why I bought it so my kids can learn how to do stuff! And if they scratch it, dent it etc. who cares!!!!

So far I have driven it about 70 miles 30 of which were on the highway at 70ish mph and the car felt smooth. Already got a thumbs up from a new 911 owner on the way to work yesterday.

So...my trans question.

I have driven the car about 4 times including the test drive. each time the car has ssat for hours so had time to cool down.

Everytime I have driven it I can go up through the gears and down through the gears 3-4 times without issue. After that it will start to grind 2nd gear.

This has to be a fluid "issue" right? The oil thins when warm so lubrication decreases?

You can check/change the fluid but it sounds like 2nd gear synchro or the 1/2 gears slider is worn out. Shoot me an email if interested in a replacement or servicing the transmission.

You are on the right track. It is cheap and easy to swap the fluid. The first thing I would do is drain the fluid and inspect. Pull the upper (fill) plug first and make sure you even have the right amount of fluid in the transmission. Then fill with a high quality fluid (you can search this, not a debate I want to start). I would also suggest bleeding the clutch at the same time, and then take it for a test drive.

If you really wanted you could send off the oil sample to see results and what percentage of metals are in the fluid, but probably not worth the expense.

If the transmission still doesn't shift well, weigh your options....If your transmission is a limited slip, you may want to rebuild or sell to fund the replacement transmission. Other than that it comes down to what you want to spend when replacing with used vs. rebuilding.

Dimi is a good source, as is KevinGross

Where are you located?

Mark from Plyhammersparts.com just posted a used open diff transmission for $250

Plyhammer has 5 of the early ones right now. He is a super guy to deal with if you end up needing one ;)

I put swepco in and after my first 30 mile trip I had 0 grinding shifting from 1st to 2nd, and only occasional grinding from 3rd to 2nd. So an improvement so far :-)

Not sure where you are located but I have a couple of transmission available too here in SoCal.

So update. With the swepco 201 in it I can now shift into 2nd with 0 grinding UNTIL the car is warmed up [or hot].

Where as before it grinded into 2nd always.

Should I try something thicker or a different brand?

Now I know no matter what I put in it something wrong is going on in the trans.

But with the swepco it solved the problem until the car is hot, so I am just trying to buy more time.
