I just put a down payment on a dime of a 944. Fantastic looking. Im getting it March 15th. It has all the service records from 88 - now. The clutch supposedly has 12k miles on it but when i drove it the clutch didnt really engage until the end of the pedal action. It grabbed really well but, should i be concerned about that? My neighbor who has plenty of E30s and E21s said that each time he puts a new clutch in those they do the same thing. He said i shouldnt be worried. Also, the AC still works in this 944! But, he had to run a wire from the fan clutch or something to get it to engage. It still blew out cold but is there a way to fix this without jumping it like that?

Congrats on the 944!
What do the records say about when the car had its last timing belt and waterpump? If no records do that ASAP! |

Clutch, timing belt/tensioners, water pump, replaced injectors all in the last 12k miles. So i do believe i have a little while to go on those. Thankfully

AC possibility.
It may have a leak and is undercharged. Next to the receiver/drier is a low pressure switch. If you jump both sides of the switch, the compressor clutch should engage and pump the Freon. GL J_AZ

So what would be a solution to the problem? Because thats how its currently wired. He jumps it and it engages it. Its pretty cold but i think im going to recharge it

Things to watch out for:
1. The constant smile on your face when you are behind the wheel of your 944 2. The feeling you get when you walk out to your garage and see the car waiting for you 3. The extra fuel you will go through as you tend to take the long way home All valid concerns! Congrats on the new purchase! Enjoy! |

I am new as they get around here.. And your 1. 2. 3. response, is just what I needed, to confirm to myself, how my recent purchase makes me feel, is NORMAL: Just bought my life long dream car, and drove her home to Maine from Mass, a couple of weeks ago ( between Snow Storms ).. A 1986 944, manual non turbo.. Lots of maint records dating back to new was a big factor in my decision making.. That said; I joined this forum because I will have a few nonsense questions i'm sure. I have found many answers here already, even some to help in my decision before my purchase.. Thanks Bernie |

Clutch wear is checked thru an inspection port in the bell housing.

You might have a Spec clutch installed, primarily used for track days or racing. When you get the car, look through the little round inspection hole. If the clutch is blue, it's a Spec clutch; your description matches how mine work. Hard to take off at stop signs/lights, etc.
