I just completed my 2070 mile journey in my '83.
It's nice to know these cars can handle running for 15 hours straight. I only had one small problem, after about 7 hours of cruising at 85... well, maybe a little faster... the car started to miss. It did it on my trip there, and on the way back. It would only miss if I held the throttle steady. If I accelerated or decelerated it didn't miss at all. If I let the car sit for a few hours, it was fine again for a while. Any ideas? I'm thinking it could be two things... I may be running a bit lean, or it could be bad spark plug wires and cap. Maybe the wires were heating up enough after 7 hours that they built up too much resistance. Coil maybe? Anyway, it was a fun trip. It was a very comfortable car to drive, I got a lot of looks and great gas mileage (about 28 Mpg). Oh yeah, it also fired right up after sitting in sub-zero weather for several hours... amazing.

I'm ready to go on a trip myself,,,where did you go? your problems might be..
bad gas, 7 hours can take you from waterlou to waterdowned. bad wires, if you got a wire loose somewhere you might be heating a sensor up with the added amp draw that might explain why it works after you let it cool off for awhile.. need more input. looks like trial and error.,not drive and error.

Just had to talk about my long trip in my 944. Went from Covington, GA to Daytona Beach Fl.
Gas mileage - amazing! With frequent stints through third gear's range for having some fun in traffic, sunroof off, 510 miles on one tank!!! I was amazed :P Either way, we cruised the strip several times, and I think I put probably 1200 miles on it those few days, and I had absolutely no problems with it - except when I forgot I turned the alarm on and embarrassed myself

I was thinking bad gas as well, however, I was putting in 91 octane and I filled up in Sioux Falls, SD, then again in Kearney, NE and it was still doing it.
I went back up to my home land of ND for the weekend. Because I was able to let it sit over night and it was fine the next day, I'm pretty certain something was heating up too hot. I also noticed that on my way there, as I got into sub-zero temps, it quit missing as much. I question the mixture a bit because I'm sure there are some sensors in there that read temp and control the fuel air mixture based on the temp. So, my theory is that when it was cold, I was runnning the correct mixture and as it became thoroughly warm after seven hours, the dme started leaning the mixture out a little too much. I'm going to hook some type of permanent mixture meter up soon. One of the strange things I noticed about the miss was that if I changed speed by a variance of about 10 Mph up or down and held it there, it was fine, no missing for about 15 minutes. The other strange thing was that even when it was missing on the interstate, it still idled fine when I pulled in to get gas, and always fired right up after shutting it off. Since it appears to be temp. related, I wonder how bad it will be in the summer? |

I can't wait until I get my next 944. I have a trip planned for it already. Boston to wisconsin. Before I go I am going to do all the belts coil cap plugs wires and oil. Probably do my opil again once I get there and when I get back. I hope I have as much good luck as you
