Help with mirror removal

I'm starting to tear down my '86 951 in preparation for a paint job. After reviewing Clark's Garage directions for removing the mirrors, I'm having a tough time getting the glass out. Does anyone have any hints on popping the glass out without breaking it? The locking ring does move CCW, but the glass refuses to come out. Help please.

The ring should move a bit, maybe 1/4-1/2". You then need to pull the mirror out of the detents it is held in. It doesn't just fall out on its own.

Good luck.

Thanks Gents, that really helps. I really needed to see what the back of the mirror glass looked like--thanks Dr DIY. I'll go give it another whack.

They definitely are a trick to get loose. Even with the ring in the disengaged position, the things stick. Be careful not to pry too hard on it as you can break one of the small actuator arms on the adjustment motors. Ask me how I know. ;-)

I've got an idea... We should start a "Ask me how I know" thread or even better yet, a hard copy book. I think it would be a very entertaining read as we all would have something to contribute!

Success! The video by Dr DIY did the trick. It actually seems that the directions on Clark's Garage tell you to turn the ring in the wrong direction (ccw) to unlock it. That and the fact the mirror does tend to stick after 30 something years makes it tough to get the thing apart. I'm just happy to not have broken anything. Thanks for your help guys. Regards-- Jesse
