Is this the correct OT mark

So I'm setting engine to TDC I'm looking for the OT mark in the flywheel I'm under the car now I want to mark the line with paint so it be easier to see I found this line but no where I see OT im assuming it covered with all the rust but is this the correct markhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503161459.jpg

Bradical 08-19-2017 10:11 AM

No, thats the line next to the OT mark. the bottom mark is more of a "slot". See this pic-

The picture below is the one you are looking at. This one should be viewable through the hole just below the speed/ref sensors on the top of the bell housing. You should be able to see both of these marks at the same time, top and bottom.

thanks bradical i found the OT mark and got the car set to TDC i already had the front covers off so the cam shaft line up perfect to

IdahoDoug 08-24-2017 12:14 AM

For clarity, I found only the line on my original 1984 944. I had it in my hand and was prepared to find another notch, etc. Nope - nothing but the line.

This is a NA model.

Dray110 08-24-2017 02:22 AM

i was working alone so every time i kept turning the crank then stopping to look through the bell housing i guess it just barely passed by but once i took the covers off and camshaft cover off and went really slow i was able to find it.

I read your post ID on your new to you 944 mines an 84 NA as well not in a good of shape as yours lol But i'm in the same process as you replacing the important stuff so i can get her on the road

IdahoDoug 08-24-2017 07:49 AM

Boy I did a terrible job giving "clarity" above. I had the flywheel in my hand. I removed it to replace the rear main behind it. I cleaned it and looked with a bright light and there is absolutely no other mark on that hunk of steel. Just the single thin line. I highlighted it with some red nail polish so I could see it in a week or two when I'm changing the belts. So, I guess I want others to know that some models apparently have only the single line.

Dray110 08-24-2017 03:41 PM

Yeah i don't know what that "Slot" is i took a picture of but thankfully my OT line was actually clear and visible once i did get it to TDC

Marajit 08-24-2017 07:22 PM

Get this.
On the factory flywheel of my '84, the bottom line is not aligned with the top OT line but lies at 8:00 o' clock.

Here's a recent picture I took of a flywheel I removed from a 1984 944. Early cars do not have the mark that lines up with the notch on the bottom of the bell housing. The OT mark on this flywheel was very hard to spot so I made sure to mark it in yellow while I had it out. Below you can see the other notch on this flywheel that I am pointing to in the pictures. This notch only exists on the early flywheels. In the third picture you can see both it and the OT mark. I hope that helps!

So I'm still confused. My 84 nonturbo 944 flywheel had only a groove I'll call it, and the screwed in peg also shown in your picture. Nothing else. With the screwed in peg pointing straight down at 6 o'clock for installing the bell housing, the groove I marked with paint is at about 3 o'clock.

There is no "OT" lettering on my flywheel. I used a bright light to inspect my flywheel while it was in my hands a few days ago.

I'll soon be using this mark to time my engine, so I would appreciate any thoughts or insights - is this my TDC mark, and where should the mark be at TDC?

Thanks in advance.
Doug

The OT marks on early flywheels are sometimes very faint. I could not find this one while it was in the car. Only after removing it from the car and using a steel brush to knock off a little surface rust was I able to see it.

That said, note that the OT mark is on the pressure plate side of the flywheel while the non-OT mark is on the backside. That means only the OT mark will be visible though the window on top of the bell housing. If you cannot see your mark in window it is not the OT mark. I hope that helps!

Dray110 08-25-2017 05:54 PM

Yeah edredas my 84 flywheel is the excate same with OT mark and that slotted mark in same place...luckily mine was easy to read but when ever I do take it out I will mark it to make it easier plus I used your tip from your timing belt video by marking the bottom of the crankshaft as well

IdahoDoug 08-25-2017 10:41 PM

Crikey. So I may have an OT mark on my flywheel that indicates TDC, eh? What is the mark I now have in red, then?

edredas 08-26-2017 01:55 PM

I'm not sure what the mark I'm pointing to was used for, but it is not useful and isn't on later flywheels. As mentioned it cannot be seen in the OT window and is around the 8 O'clock position if you're facing the flywheel, so its hidden up in the bell housing when the OT mark is lined up. If you need help finding the OT mark you can stick a dowel in the #1 spark plug hole... but finding the exact spot can be tricky since one tooth the other way and the OT mark is out of the window... so what I do is use a dial indicator and when the piston is precisely at the top that is where you will find the OT mark in the window! I hope that helps!

IdahoDoug 09-10-2017 05:58 PM

So, my 0 TDC mark on the flywheel is in the window up by the crank sensors on top of the bell housing. However, the picture in my manual is helpfully so dark it looks like the mark is halfway in up the window and NOT lined up with that large fin. I'd think the mark is supposed to be quite precisely aligned with the bottom of that fin. All I can see is the top of the fin in the picture. Could someone confirm the marks is supposed to be aligned with the bottom edge of the fin, or provide a clear picture? Thanks!

Doug

Marajit,

Thanks for making that comment. So is mine - at 8 oclock viewed from the rear of the engine on my 84. Finally, I've got things lined up. OK, time to get to work.

Sherif123 09-29-2018 08:53 PM

Hey guys, so I'm having the same problem, is the on my 84 944 NA, I can never get it to time properly, is the 0T line suppose to be perfectly lined up with the casting on the bellhousing, because when I'm dead centre on my camshaft marks, the 0T is not lined up with the casting, it's just a bit past it, and can't get them both to perfectly line up, is it suppose to be like that?

edredas 09-29-2018 09:49 PM

Pictures directly from my youtube video showing how they should line up. I hope that helps!

Sherif123 09-29-2018 10:21 PM

That's pretty dead on compared to what I've got going one right now, my cam mark perfectly fine but then the 0T is slightly off to the right and can't get it perfect with casting for some reason, this is very frustrating...

mattdavis11 09-29-2018 11:47 PM

Looks like it's off, but it's not. Must have been a short sob in Germany that gave reference.
