Early and late turbo suspension
Is there any difference between the first year 86 turbo and the later years 87-88 and the 89(Turbo S) suspension. Any difference in performance? Thanks

Progressively better, from offset, spindle diameter, dampening, brake piston diameter, torsion bar size, swaybar size etc.

Turbo S is actually different than the standard 87 and up packages. The "S" had coil over fronts and adjustable dampers all the way around.
I have the Turbo "S" package on my 87, if you can find one hold out for it. My regular 87 951 suspension was disappointing in comparison to my new turbo "S" package.

You can achieve the same results w/ adj. konis w/ a coilover kit and hypercoil springs from Jason @ Paragon for much less, I'm sure Pelican may even have some things available.

Oh no not at all, I completely forgot about Paragon's setup. My setup was from a wrecked "951 S" and it was a steal.

Coilover kit as in the complete perches and springs that get rid of the stock strut housing or whatever, or just some upgraded springs and adjustable konis all around? Do you believe the turbo suspension will be quite the upgrade from the n/a? Thanks

The turbo suspension itself is very different than the NA. To me it seemed tighter and the rear end did not break loose as easily.
And yes the coilovers have different perches. The spring actually sits on a threaded collar on the bottom so you can adjust ride height.

I wouldnt want any stiffer than 220 lb for comfort while street driving, do they make a cheap coilover setup with a low spring rating on them? I have seen expensive ones and are like 600 lb ratings which is way way way to stiff for me if im not track racing, so would the stock shock inserts be put in the new threaded collar housings or would the perch be cut off or just left remaining there. Do the coilover kits usually come in the back to? Ive seen ones that are a shock and coilover that go in the back besides the torsion bars and have heard you can take out the torsion bars. Is this the best setup to get for performance, comfort and price? I want the best bang for the buck setup! Help me out guys, thanks alot scott!
John PS - did you get the turbo s suspension setup from the same junkyard you got your new turbo? |

No from my mechanic at Eurosport Ltd, it was off a damaged track car.

The fronts are inserts that go into you existing struts, they have a threaded sleeve that slids down over the shock body, your old bottom perch is unused now, since the spring now sits on a perch that is on the threaded sleeve which you can move up or down to lower or raise the car, you use a different spring mount on top(included) and you existing shock mounts. As far as the rear goes, just use the shocks by themselves, no need to use helper springs or a full coilover yet.

Highboost,
I just looked at that, thanks, would getting a coilover package be significantly better than just a set of stiffer springs that are 1 inch lower. It is less than half the price of a front coilover kit. Say you adjust the coilover kit to 1" lowered, and got 200 lb springs with the kit. And then you got 200 lb weltmeister springs that are 1" lower that go on your stock perch, would the coilover kit perform better? thanks John |

Well the coilover kits fit the n/a also, so it wouldnt be worth buying the turbo suspension if im going to upgrade to something that the n/a can already be upgraded to. If i bought the coilover fronts for the n/a, and got the turbo swaybars, wouldnt it perform exactly the same as a complete turbo suspension with the coilover fronts? Thanks

Say you find 1" is a little too high or low for your street driving, moving it up or down a 1/2" would be a lot easier w/ the coilover kit, just a twist of the setscrew and the perch vs. removing the struts, disassembling them and buying new springs, the choice is yours.

Yes w/ the exception of a 1 or 2mm smaller torsion bar in the rear depending on what year 951 suspension you have.
Isn't that what I recommended to you in the other post?

Yah i understand that it is nice to be able to adjust it but will it perform an better? Im thinking twice about getting the turbo suspension and just buying the coilovers for my n/a, and buying a set of turbo swaybars or 968 swaybars, would that be just as good? Thanks

Sorry, we are posting at the same time and didnt see your answer until i was done writing it. I dont remember you telling me to do that, but is that what you would recommend? Are the turbo rear shocks any bigger than non turbo front shocks? Thanks
