944 tires

I just got a 83 944. It has stock 15 in wheels. I am currently running 215 60 and really want to upsize to 245 50 15. Can my wheels handle this? Will they fit in he front? and rear?. Do you have any other suggestions for tires?

Thanks
Chip

welcome to the board, as far as the body goes there is plenty of room for 245's in the rear.enough room for 245-17's if you really wanted to. how wide are the rims that came on your car?

You could do this, but handling will actually be diminished, somewhat, because the sidewalls will be pinched way beyond what's optimal. You may not see much difference on the street, but at an autocross last year, a guy who had 275's couldn't understand how he could be so much slower than me with my 215s. Tall sidewalls and a heavier tire made a big difference. If you're driving on the street, and like the looks, go for it.

Would 225 50 15 be a better alternative?

what would you suggest?

I am running 225/50-15s on my stock wheels, and that is a very noticeable improvement over the 215/60-15s I have tried...
The tires I'm currently running are Toyo Proxes, and they are cheap too
I had a lot of understeer with the other tires I've tried (whoever said Dunlop A2 Sports were 'performance' tires anyway - ::Smack:: Tire rack )

225/50/15s would be great. I'm currently using Yokohama AVS ES100s. Love 'em. Not many truly high performance tires are made in 15" sizes. The Yokos are a winner.

A lot of people here use 225 without problem but is till believe that is to much tire for 7", the correct size is 205 you can handle the 215 but 225.
the 225 is for 7.5 to 8.5" normally used in 8"
All the brands have this sizes because is very common tire
245 in 7" wheels of course not !
Only 2 brands make the 245 in 15" goodrich and bridgestone and Is very difficult to find it and very, very expensive.

so what i am being told is to get the 215 60 15's?? I am a poor college student and I want to increase the handeling of my car for little $$. would it make sense to go to 215 55's? What will give me the best preformance and look! I would love to get wider tire look. I feel like now the car looks like it has sedan tires on it. They are 215 60 cooper cobras???

Would a 215 give me beter road contact?

would a 225 have the sdewalls pinched?

I have 7in wheels

I respect your replys Eduardo I simply don't know too much about this!!

Thanks
Chip

225s will work. In a local racing series with a max rim width of 7", everybody is using 225/50s. There is some pinching, but it gives you more rubber on the road, so it's a good trade off. If it works on the track, you'll be fine on the street.

both of those will leave more space between the fender and the tires because the tires have a smaller diameter than stock.

This will also result in incorrect speedo...
